Tulsa Shock and YWCA Team Up for Girls on the Run 5K
On Saturday May 17th the Tulsa Shock and YWCA Tulsa teamed up for the 2015 Spring Girls on the Run 5K Event as part of the start of the annual WNBA Cares Week. The event started early Saturday morning when the all the Shock players and staff went to separate stations to help show the young participants the importance of exercise, but also in having fun while doing it. These stations included Happy Hair, Hoola Hoops, Mean Stinks (Anti-Bullying), Temporary Tattoos and Sign-Making.
The players split up into groups of three and each group went to their own station to get the girls excited for the run. Shock coaches and staff floated around from station to station to help out as well, and made sure everything ran smoothly. After about a half an hour of pre-race fun, the team set up for a quick autograph and photograph session for all the runners and their families. After this it was time for everyone to get ready for the run.
The players, coaches, staff and Volt teamed up with a Zumba instructor so that the young participants could warm up and get loose and ready for the run. The instructor certainly brought enough energy for those who weren’t quite awake yet! The runners were extremely excited to be there and dance with the team. When they finished up with Zumba it was time for a few words of inspiration before the run began. As the racers were listening all the Shock players and staff lined up to form a send-off tunnel for the runners when the race began.
A few Shock staff members were designated running buddies as well, paired up with select kids to help them get through the race. The other staff members went ahead to cheer stations to help encourage the runners as they completed the run. All of the runners ran through the tape and were given awards so that they knew that they were all winners. It was a fun time for all of those involved. The Shock is proud to support the YWCA and this very important mentoring program that helps empower young girls to reach their full potential in life.
